Monkeys are very sociable animals which means they like to be with other monkeys all the time and do not like to be by themselves. Groups of monkeys, called troops, travel around together to find food. Very young monkeys are helpless at birth, so they get carried by their mothers. When the troop is not traveling, monkey babies are very active, they spend much of their time playing. Playing helps young monkeys develop physical and social skills they need for adult life.
Grinning, or pulling the lip up to show the teeth, may seem like a smile to us. But for monkeys this is a sign of aggression or anger, because biting is one way monkeys fight and defend themselves. Other signs of aggression include head bobbing, yawning (again, to show the teeth), and jerking the head and shoulders forward.
Tip The Can
Hi Kids! This week we are going to tell you how to play a really exciting and fun game which takes place outdoors. Get a group of friends together and select one person as 'the searcher'. The searcher must close his/her eyes and count to 100 while standing at the can. While the searcher is counting the rest of the group must go and hide outside in different places but it must be done quietly so the searcher can’t hear you. The aim of the game is for the searcher to find each person before that person can run up to the can without being caught. Whoever runs up to the can first and shouts out 'Tip the Can' is the winner. Beware! If the searcher catches you while running up to the can, you are out!
Liven Up Your Lunch Box
Staying healthy is a very important part of every day life. In order to grow up into a healthy big boy or girl, you have to eat the right foods and drink plenty of water.
Fruit and vegetables should be eaten every day along with some other foods such as meat and fish. Dairy products such as milk and cheese should also be eaten regularly in order to have strong bones.
Carbohydrates are very good for giving energy and these are found in wholegrain bread or rolls. Protein is another nutrient that is an essential part of your diet. By eating meat such as chicken, beef or turkey, you will help your body to grow.
Don’t forget to wash all these foods down into your tummy with a healthy drink. Whether it be water, milk or a healthy fruit juice, make sure you stay away from those fizzy sugary drinks.
Mushrooms & Toadstools
Mushrooms and toadstools are part of the Fungi family and come in lots of shapes and sizes. They are known as plants. They get their energy from eating other plants.
If you look around this time of year, you will see lots of mushrooms. An American scientist found one species of mushroom that grows over so much land that it covers over 1,000 football pitches!!
When you look at a mushroom, you are seeing the flower part. Most of the plant is actually underground and can have very big roots. You can eat some mushrooms, but other mushrooms are poisonous!
It's Time to Play
There are lots of ways you can play, which is good for you because it’s fun and you are exercising your body! If you are with a friend or by yourself, you can still play! Why not try this?
- See How Long you hop on one foot
- Do jumping jacks
- Make up a dance, like your favourite popstar
- Get your mum to bring you to swimming classes
- Play hopscotch
If you keep active, your body works well, feels good, and can do all the things you want to do, like run around with your friends. Also, it helps you have lots of energy to play if you eat lots of fruit and vegetables, and drink water & milk.
