  • Title: 'Mi-News on the Block'
  • Theme: Publish Your Winning Local Newspaper

The sixth class pupils of St. Patrick's Senior National School, Skerries, landed one of the biggest journalistic scoops of last year when their newspaper 'Mi-News on the Block' was announced as the National Winner in the 2002 MiWadi Cultural Awards.

The theme of last year's MiWadi Cultural Awards - 'Publish Your Winning Local Newspaper' - invited senior primary school children to create a fun newspaper that was packed full of stories, reports, photographs and drawings detailing local news and history, as well as interviews and features with people from their area. The 31 intrepid young journalists of St. Patrick's SNS were selected to win the National Award for their newspaper 'Mi-News on the Block'. The 8-page newspaper - which was edited by Nóra Thornton Stout (12) - displayed an informative and entertaining mix of news and feature content from North Dublin, all presented in a visually appealing and an easy-to-read design that is in the classic newspaper tradition. Sections covered in 'Mi-News on the Block' included Local News, Business Enterprise, Culture, Nature, Lifestyle and - of course - Sport. Reports included interviews with local Gardaí on drug abuse, a profile of Senator Jim Glennon, golfing tips from local pro Jimmy Kinsella and - not forgetting the World Cup - a feature on Japanese culture. According to Teacher, Colette Murray:

"Taking part in the MiWadi Cultural Awards was an enriching experience for all of the children who were involved. They learned and used skills of co-operation, collaboration, research and leadership, not to mention their enhanced writing and computer skills. It was a truly cross-curricular exercise - very worthwhile."
