The MiWadi Cultural Awards is not only rewarding - it's also great fun. Check out these letters from previous entrants to find out how much fun you and your school can have this year.
What they had to say:
"Taking part in the MiWadi Cultural Awards was an enriching experience for all of the children who were involved. They learned and used skills of co-operation, collaboration, research and leadership, not to mention their enhanced writing and computer skills. It was a truly cross-curricular exercise - very worthwhile"

"We greatly enjoyed and benefited from our participation in last year’s MiWadi Cultural
Awards and are glad to be able to express our gratitude and appreciation for the
interactive learning opportunity afforded to the
pupils, teachers, parents and community. Children learn ‘important things ’at school
every day, but they will never forget the things
they learned on the side of that canal last
year. The whole experience was uplifting and
unforgettable. The beautiful trophies now occupy pride of place in a new display cabinet
in our school and the whole project has awakened a sense of awareness
about a canal that was almost forgotten and
abandoned. A local tourism group has plans to re-enact
the pageant as a tourist attraction and the copy of the project in the local
Tourist Office attracts much attention and favourable
comment. The children also greatly appreciated the
opportunity afforded them to appear on Den TV.
As a teaching staff, we enjoyed and benefited enormously from
our participation in The MiWadi Cultural Awards for the last
two years – we recommend it to any school as a positive and
beneficial learning activity and look forward to our future
involvement."

"This has been a very worthwhile project for the pupils and they enjoyed it immensely. I feel that the MiWadi project has given us the opportunity to study life in our town in an exciting, innovative and creative way. The children have carried out detailed research and have gained a great deal of knowledge from their
study."

| "As the
teacher/co-ordinator of our project "Tales by the
Fireside fadó, fadó", it was a pleasure to be involved in this project. From the very start we had intended becoming involved with the MiWadi initiative as it encompassed for us a large part of our history programme for the year. It was a comprehensive study about ordinary people, which highlighted the rich heritage that surrounded the children in their own locality. It also had great relevance to the new curriculum currently being introduced to all primary schools. It highlighted to the pupils that "History is caught rather than taught". They worked diligently, carrying out interviews, compiling videos, editing and taking photographs. They were actively involved in the history surrounding them - a most enriching experience and becoming the Leinster Finalists was the highlight for these girls. Looking forward to working with MiWadi again in the
future."

| "We thoroughly enjoyed our involvement in the MiWadi project and it has certainly sparked off a huge interest locally in the history of Bantry. Perhaps what impresses me most about the MiWadi Project is its scope that allows the pupils to develop their own individual talents. For example, I had pupils who participated who learned how to design their own web site, (distance learning approach involving e-mail link-up with an expert in Cork). This was a huge boost to their confidence and self-esteem. Other pupils expressed themselves through the art and design aspect of the project whilst those with good inter-personal skills excelled in the production of the video. All in all it was a most successful project and I am looking forward hopefully to involving my new class in the 2001
Awards."
