Cork School wins overall prize in 2003 MiWadi Cultural Awards

Huge excitement in the little village of Rylane in North Cork
There is huge excitement in the little village of Rylane in North Cork this week following the news that the pupils of Rylane National School won not only the Regional Award for Munster, but also the overall prize in the 2003 MiWadi Cultural Awards.

The 9 lucky winners came up to a special ceremony in Dublin last week, where they were presented with their lovely awards and €2000 for their school by Eileen Dunne from RTE and Jane Fortune from MiWadi.

The students had done their project on their local heroes in Rylane - these included an All-Ireland weight lifter, an All-Ireland Plough champion, an All-Ireland camogie-player champion and the oldest man in Rylane, who is 90 years old!

Some of the heroes came up to the awards ceremony to congratulate their young friends. After the Awards Ceremony, the students from Rylane along with the regional winning schools from the other 3 provinces had a big party, with balloons, clowns and plenty of chips and ice cream - and of course they drank MiWadi! This was followed by a once in a lifetime trip to see the Special Olympics at the RDS.

The other regional winners were: Ulster - Beechlawn N.S. from Hillsborough, Co. Down, Leinster - Scoil Naomh Fiachra from Co. Kilkenny, Connaught - Scoil Croí Íosa from Ballina, Co. Mayo and Drimoleague N.S. from Drimoleague, Co. Cork was highly-commended.
