Pupils Drink The Canal Dry? |
| On Thursday 14th June 2001, even if they had wanted to, the pupils from St. Joseph's National School, Cong, Co. Mayo couldn't have sailed into Dublin to collect their MiWadi Cultural Award, as their local canal has never held a drop of water. This 'dry' canal formed the subject of their national award winning entry. |
 |
| In their project entitled "The Unfinished Canal" the pupils discovered that it was actually built from cavernous limestone, which acted like a sieve and therefore could never hold water. The canal, which runs between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib was built during the famine years and is featured in many primary school textbooks.
The pupils collected their award and a cheque for £2,000 at the Mansion House from the Rt. Honourable Maurice Ahern, Lord Mayor of Dublin. He also presented the three other finalists with their awards.
This year is the fifth year of the MiWadi Cultural Awards and hundreds of school children around the country were involved in entering projects. The competition was developed by MiWadi to encourage all primary schools to develop an interest in, and awareness of local, environmental, cultural and historical issues.
"All of the entries were of an exceptional standard and judges had a very difficult task in selecting the winners. The winning entries were imaginative, informative and showed evidence of considerable hard work by pupils of all ages and their teachers in the schools" said Stephen Cooke, MiWadi Brand Manager. "This competition has proved to be a natural link for MiWadi, a brand which itself has enjoyed a long and fruitful heritage".
There were also an additional ten schools who were highly commended. |
