Teachers' Tips
Lesson Plan 3 - What do I read, watch and listen to in MiWorld?
Objective:
Each pupil learns to identify the sources of information that are available to them and their importance, whether it is books, newspapers, TV, radio or the internet. They begin to understand how the media in their world today can provide them with valuable information.
One
The reproducible 'What Do I Read, Watch and Listen To In MiWorld' worksheet (Worksheet 4) can be used to record a pupil's favourite source of information. Discuss the media and identify the amount of time pupils spend using different media on a daily basis, e.g. reading books, magazines, newspapers; listening to radio; watching TV; using the internet. Then graph the results for individual pupils, and for the whole class.
Two
Invite pupils to publish a school newsletter in which they report the findings of their survey. This newsletter can also include interviews, news and stories from MiWorld, with a particular focus on their school and locality, accompanied by drawings and pictures.
Three
Invite pupils to record a video news programme on their school, home or community on a Camcorder. Include interviews with school friends, teachers and family.
Extension Activities:
- Introduce pupils to the basics of advertising, how and why advertising is produced, and what to look for in an advertisement. Compare and contrast advertisements from magazines or ask pupils to identify their favourite adverts, then discuss why they like or dislike each. Log on to
www.miwadi.com to look at MiWadi advertising and see how it has changed over the years.
- Invite pupils to devise a script for their own advert and design the advert using one of the following strands of the visual arts: Fabric & Fibre; Drawing; Print; Clay; Construction; Paint & Colour. Pupils can also record an advertisement for radio or TV.
- Pupils can log on to www.miwadi.com to find news and stories from the world of science, nature, sport and entertainment, that is specifically written for children to learn from and enjoy.
