Teachers' Tips
Lesson Plan 1 - I am learning about Ireland in MiWorld
Objective:
Pupils can begin to explore and learn about the many exciting feats and initiatives undertaken by Irish people in the worlds of science, sport, arts, and the community.
One
Use the 'Here's MiWorld - Inspiring Facts' poster to introduce pupils to some of the fascinating achievements recorded both at home and abroad by Irish people in recent years.
Two
Now use the 'Here's MiWorld - Inspiring Facts' poster to encourage children to identify 'MiHero' - this can be a person or people in their local community, including friends and family, or in the broader national environment, whom they feel has made an important contribution to their world. Use the reproducible 'Here's MiWorld Today' worksheet (Worksheet 1) to record pupils' comments and observations.
Three
Using the 'Here's MiWorld - Inspiring Facts' poster, invite pupils to write an essay / project on a famous Irish person or achievement.
Four
Discuss the roles of key members of the community in MiWorld, e.g. firefighter, police service, postal worker, doctor, nurse, teacher, senior citizen, clergy, etc. Invite representatives in to the school to talk about their work and contribution to society and encourage the pupils to ask questions of the visitor.
Five
Encourage Oral Language Development through inviting pupils to discuss the world around them at home with their family, grandparents, senior citizens, etc., and then report orally in school. Invite pupils to ask questions about how the world has changed in the time since they were children.
Extension Activities:
- Tell the story of a great Irish feat or achievement through mime, drama, song, rap, poetry, etc.
- Video the children acting out a great Irish feat or achievement.
